What Is Traditional Medicine?

Traditional medicine is a kind of medicine which the ingredients were made from plants, animal, mineral, or combination of all. Those ingredients are processed traditionally, and have been used for generations to be used as medical purpose. The most popular form of traditional medicine is using herbs or medicinal plants.

Today, traditional medicine is becoming more popular because its availability and affordable price. Moreover, according to several researches, the side effect of traditional medicine is not as much as chemical medicine. Some of them even didn’t have any effect as long as it’s used appropriately.


So, which one is better, the traditional medicine or chemical medicine? The answer is depends on the circumstances. Most of traditional medicine has slow response. On emergency case such as bleeding, maybe it’s better to use chemical medicine for its faster reaction in dealing with the symptoms and to reduce pain. Chemical medicine also better to be applied in handling case of acute illnes such as cancer or tumor. For its emergency, conventional treatmet such as surgery is more effective.

In this condition, traditional medicine cannot be used solely but have to be accompanied by chemical or modern medicine. The herbs medicines can be useful for reducing the side effect of chemical medicine.

Why the reaction of this two medicine is different? It’s because of the different mechanism of these two medicines. Chemical medicine works by eliminating the symptoms and reduce pain, but not cure the source. Chemical drugs only fix some part of body system. In the other side, herbal medicine work directly to fix the whole body system by improving body’s cell, tissues and damaged organs, and to boost the immune system of the body.


But some medicine is not fixing directly to the cause. For example, chamberbitter or phyllanthus urinaria has side effect just like antibiotics. Chamberbitter is not directly kill the bacteria but activate the glands that produce T-Cells which is a natural killer of germs. That is why herbal medicine like chamberbitter needs longer time to cure the disease.
