The Benefits of Cloves as Traditional Medicine

Cloves or clove, known in Latin as Syzygium aromaticum , are the aromatic dried flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae. Originally from Maluku island in Indonesia, cloves often used as spice in cuisines all over the world.

In European countries, clover is often used as a spice in cooking, while in Indonesia is commonly used as the main ingredient of cigarettes. Beside for culinary purpose, cloves actually has another significant benefit for traditional medicine such as following:

  1. Can help Respiratory Infection problem. A cup of Tea with cloves can help overcome respiratory infections. The cloves can work as expectorant which make mucus in esophagus and throat became more liquid.
  2. Can help with toothache. The flower of cloves can help us to treat toothache. We just need 5 to 10 grains of roasted cloves flower, then pounded until became powder. Then put the powder onto the teeth
  3. Can help to cure acne. Cloves contain euganol, which is known as natural antiseptic for skin balance. The euganol can help to prevent the acne arise in the skin, and also help to erase acne scars
  4. Alternative germs cleaners. The euganol content in cloves is very useful to keep your tool clean. Clove oil can reduce bacteria or fungi that exist, and prevent the germs to come. Mix ½ tablespoon of cloves oil in two cups of water, then spray it to the places or tools susceptible with bacteria or germs such as bathroom wall or floor. 
  5. Natural perfume for clothes. Cloves have natural scent that can cover the odor and keep your clothes stay fresh. Keep few sticks of clove in your clothes and replace it every 2-4 week to keep the scent.
